Karate is a form of martial art particular to the Okinawans. It was mainly used for self-defense. The techniques and philosophies were passed down from generation to generation. EKS practices the ancient Okinawan art of Shorin Ryu Shorinkan. Shorin is the Japanese way of saying Shaolin. It also mean ‘small forest” or “pine forest”. Ryu means “branch, stream, or system”. Shorin-Ryu Karate is the oldest karate fighting style.
There are several different forms of Shorin ryu : Kobayashi, Matsubayashi, Matsumura Orthodox and Shobayashi. We practice the Kobayashi form.
Karate has evolved from mainly a form of self-defense to a competitive sport. EKS participates in various tournaments throughout the state and particularly in AAU supported events.
