There are many benefits to learning Karate that helps the individual achieve a sound body, mind and spirit. Karate is an ancient Okinawan martial art that has both a spiritual side as well as a physical side. It is not only a means of self-defense but also a way of improving and maintaining health. Our program supports the three (3) S concept : improved self-image, self-respect, and self-confidence.

For kids and young adults, practicing karate can lead to improved grades, respect for parents and others, increased concentration, coordination, perseverance, and dexterity. We pride ourselves on helping our youth learn leadership skills, set goals and achieve those goals. We include opportunities to develop team-work, cooperation, and self-discipline. A healthy spirit of competitiveness is developed and monitored as a result of our ‘can do’ approach to teaching. For adults, weight control, stress control, and self-confidence are some of the benefits from enrolling in a karate program. We believe that regular physical activity improves both your physical as well as your emotional well-being.

Kobudo (Weapons)

Matsubayashi ryu also incorporates the use of Okinawan weapons, in a term called kobudo. Okinawan kobudo uses the same stances and theory of movement as karate kata. There are many weapons identified with Okinawan kobudo. Our dojo currently train with:

Bo - Sai - Tonfu - Kama - Ecku - Nunchuku And more...

"...success in budo does not necessarily rely on how you are built; rather, it depends on how strenuously you try to train yourself "

Goju-Ryu
This class teach Goju-Ryu kata's and technics. Great for competition.

The founder of Goju Ryu karate was Miyagi Chojun Sensei, a personal disciple of Kanryo Higaonna Sensei. Higaonna opened a dojo in Naha using eight forms brought from China. Miyagi introduced the concepts of ‘hard soft way’ in 1930. In Goju Ryu, the emphasis is on blocking techniques using a circular motion with quick counter attacks.

Shorin Ryu
It is believed that Shorin Ryu can trace it’s roots back to the ‘famed Shaolin Temple’. It is rumored that Karate began when Bodhidharma arrived at Shaolin-si (small forest temple) in China and began to teach Zen Buddhism. He also introduced the monks to a series of exercises to strengthen their mind, body and spirit. It became prevalent on the island of Okinawa where it was referred to as Shuri-Te (empty-hand fighting). Two main groups of Te were developed . Shorin Ryu was around the city of Shuri . Shorin-Ryu emphasized breathing and quick movements.
